How to Check Visa Card Validity

Invalid Visa cards trick even seasoned merchants. Criminals tamper with the magnetic strip and alter the name and number appearing on the card. Quick or haphazard scanning allows crooks to purchase goods with fake or stolen cards. You can protect yourself against the misuse of Visa cards by taking a few simple steps that will allow you to check the validity of every Visa card presented to you.

Ask for a photo identification card. Match the name on the photo identification card with the Visa card. This will prevent many fraudulent Visa transactions.
    • 2
Swipe the Visa card through the magnetic strip scanner. By using the scanner you will be able to quickly determine if the card is valid.
    • 3
Wait for the authorization response from Visa. The response will be one of the following: Approved, declined, call, pick up and no match. Approved and declined responses appear for valid cards, although the latter means that Visa won't pay for the purchase. The other three responses usually indicate an invalid Visa.
    • 4
Check the display terminal after an approval authorization. The number on valid Visa cards will match the number displayed on the terminal.
    • 5
Ask the cardholder to sign the transaction receipt. Check the signature on the receipt to make sure that it matches the signature on the card. Invalid or stolen cards will have mismatched signatures.
